Come enjoy poetry, music, acting and more at this annual event to showcase the many talented artist in Ohio.  

 Get your ticket to see and hear some of Ohio's great talent at the Open Mic Contest this July 12th at our 7th Annual Columbus Black Theatre Festival.  


Do you have talent? Are you a poet, singer, musician, dancer, actor?  If you do you can ALSO sign-up to participate in the $100 Cash 1st place prize AND FREE professional digital head shot courtesy of RunSong Images.

Elder Is Said, Ohio playwright and poet will be a featured artist.


              How to sign-up for the Contest:

1)  Purchase a General Admission Ticket of $10. 

2)  Doors open to the public at 7:00 PM. Sign-up to participate between 7:00 - 7:30 PM.

3) Content must be for GENERAL PUBLIC as youth may be present.

4) If under 18 years old you will need parental/guardian to sign a Consent/Media Release.

5) Have your music on a CD or Flash Drive.

6) Performance must be no longer than 5 minutes.

7) Contest Judges will use a point system to choose the winner.

8) Tie-breakers will be done by audience vote (the loudest applause.) 

    Invite your family and friends to come and support you.

ZULA

Zula is a story about a young woman that returns home to confront the strained relationship with her mother after the burdens of her new found domesticity becomes a bigger burden than she can bear.  This play explores the impact of social inequality and gender disparities in the black community and how they manifest in relationships between black mothers and daughters.

Zaada is a woman who believes that Black Lives Matter, but not the vote.  She believes in loving the black man, but not herself.  Zaada's father is dealing with her leaving college shortly after the Opioid death of his wife.  Zaada's  Memaw  adores her and supports her.  This four generations of family members deal with the development of society and it's effects on the family.  

Elder Is Said, Ohio poet and playwright opens this show.

TUSKEGEE LOVE LETTERS

This is a love story of the romance between a young woman and her pilot husband separated by war.  The story is told through their letters, which were discovered by their daughter years after the passing of her parents.  The play begins with the daughter sharing with the audience, background information of the 99th Pursuit Fighter Squardon, later known as the Tuskegee Airmen.  A mother takes her children to Mississippi, back to the house that she once visited her Grandmother.  During the car ride the children have argued to the point that mom has gotten frustrated.  The trip was to take them to their family reunion, but mom has decided that it was time for a lesson of sisterhood.
